Hooray for combining technologies, this is a shining example of such work. So basically I’ve managed to put JRuby in an applet and make the ruby actually run the OpenGL code directly.

Hey, I've got a really awesome deal I'd like to offer to anybody who'll take it: If you will give me $20, I will happily pay you $12 in return. Sound like a great deal? No? It occurred to me this weekend that it's the kind of deal most independent video game developers keep making with publishers, again and again.

One thing I find very interesting is different computer languages, their development and their differences. I spend most of my time in C++, but the little exposure I’ve had to LISP or to other languages always leaves me wishing that C’s macros were cleaner, or that C++ had a way to implement a nice multi-variable for-each.

As I mentioned in the previous post (which I accidentally published prematurely), I've been speaking on JavaFX Script at Sun Tech Days in Sydney, Australia. This was a great experience, as it was a well-run, informative conference. Of course, Sydney is a beautiful city, filled with wonderful people.

Last week some of us from the Mono team at Novell went to San Francisco for the Game Developers Conference. As some of my dear readers know, I was not much of a gamer a year ago, and I do not claim to understand this industry. Mono is currently being used by a major publisher [1] to script a new version of a popular franchise (the new edition) and Mono is also the engine that drives Unity3D for scripting and SecondLife is beta testing Mono now on their beta grid.

You don't need to confine yourself to all the serious stuff when using Eclipse. There's a number of plugins available that have nothing to do with programming, but are useful for programmers. Eclipse can be turned into an entertainment center with things like Google searches, media players, games and RSS feeds.

One approach to make planners more efficient in practice (for example when applied to games) involves using a hierarchical search instead, which also provides the designers with more control. The SHOP planner, or Simple Hierarchical Ordered Planner is a perfect example of these ideas in practice.

Figuring out how to make a 2d ajax game multi-player was one of the hardest feets I had to beat when figuring out how to make these games. Making everything in-sync is the hardest part. But I believe I can explain this in a way everyone can understand so your game too can be multi-player.

When your job is to build an intelligent system, the more time you spend testing and tweaking the better the results will be. Conversely, if you waste half of your working day waiting for something to happen, then you’re not at the peak of productivity!
